CARMEN'S CURLFAMILY

It's time to change your habits.

I was miserable.

Greetings, my name is Carmen.

I’m the founder of Brown Skin Women, a natural hair and lifestyle company in the US. I’ve served and trained thousands of curlfriends in over eleven countries. Together we have done big chops and transitioned out unwanted or damaged hair that eventually helped improve our quality of life.

But before starting Brown Skin Women, I was miserable.

My struggle with depression.

My struggle with sole special needs motherhood.

My struggle with how I treated my body and felt about my hair.

This is how the miserable cycle usually went…

I watch a rom-com of a character living a perfect life and feel so inspired.

I live the next few days motivated to live a better life.

I work my 9-5 anxiously awaiting the weekend.

Go clubbing with my friends and binge trash food over the weekend.

Then on Sunday night reality set in…

I’m in a toxic relationship.

I live in the hood.

And I have depression linked to generational trauma.

So I fall back in line with life as I know it.

I watch another rom-com and then…

You know what happens next.

It didn’t help that I was hiding from my family and friends, I was pretending to be stable and happy.

Behind the stylish clothes, relaxed hair, and nice car, I was miserable.

You’re probably thinking “I can relate” to that (or some part of my journey).

You want to read this part.

This is where it gets good.

There is a quote by Elizabeth Gilbert that goes “Ruin is a gift. Ruin is the road to transformation.”

Take a look at group therapy and AA Meetings…

Healing is one of the hardest things you can do, yet they all keep showing up because they’re there for the support first, and recovery second.

This is exactly what happened when I started Brown Skin Women.

The community is what kept me going after I did the big chop and navigated the heavy road that is healing through therapy and food. We struggled together, we inspired each other, and we had fun while doing it.

Because we are showing up intentionally, we can be convinced and committed. This helps us show up ready to transition at a faster rate.

We start with our hair.

It was common for our community to improve their relationship with their natural hair within ONE week.

What was different about the community?

How did we improve so fast?

How did we stay so consistent?

After some deep reflecting, I narrowed it down to 2 main reasons:

The Mindset

Natural hair is so much more than just hair; it’s a lifestyle.

So, when we focus on the struggle we can see clearly WHY we feel the way we do about our hair.

It’s a light bulb moment: In order to improve my hair, I need to unlearn all the things I know.

This mindfulness allows my Brown Skin Women Curlfamily to be open to change through learning how easy their hair can be.

We’re ready to learn what our ancestors never knew.

The Practice

People are creatures of habit and usually resistant to change.

Even after learning, they are slow to give themself a chance to apply what they learn.

Trying to apply what they learn is the first step.

The problem happens when they get stuck.

They just need a little supportive practice to get past the hump.

That’s exactly what I’m here for…

Just by being in the same space with me, I was able to provide that.

I want to create the same supportive community FOR YOU!

I want to make you feel like you’re in the room working next to me.

I want you to build the hair freedom and confidence that naturally shifts towards other areas of your life.

I want you to see what goes on behind the scene of my daily work with others as well as my advice and rants.

It’s called Carmen’s Curlfamily. A supportive way to practice curl confidence and a soft life.

It’ll be like you’re changing your habits while getting supported and inspired by me daily.

You arrive ready to fix your hair and leave with a better quality of life.

I am often told, “you inspire me.” I am honored to show up for you too.

What’s Included

Carmen's Curlfamily in a nutshell...

As Curlfamily, you’ll be added to my official community and my “Close Friends” group on Instagram.

Together we will grow through luxury and cultural experiences, peer-to-peer learning, networking both virtually, in person, and through group introductions in the areas of:

Tight Curls

Where the shift begins. And if you ask me, this is what the hair education space is lacking: supportive PRACTICE. No matter where you received your tight curl training, two-way actionable and measurable practice is the exact support you need to improve and perfect your hair care and styling.

Wellness

You are: what you eat, the sleep you don’t get, the movement you don’t make, and the clutter you keep. I think you get where I’m going here. My partner led Wellness CurlFamily resources inspire you to take care of yourself, inside and out. What’s better than being the best version of yourself?

The core of this membership is practicing with the community. Improving your hair, growing through wellness, and making life-long friends… In order to achieve this, we need to practice as we learn, not just learn. Let’s practice together!
